Our Friday collections continue with one of our favourite topics – documentaries telling intriguing real-life trials and crimes worldwide. Most of them can be watched on Netflix, and as you might guess, we highly recommend them!
1. Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez
Everything changes for a former New England Patriots player when he becomes the prime suspect in a murder. This three-part documentary film uses courtroom footage, phone calls, and interviews to tell the story of Aaron Hernandez, who goes from a star athlete to a convicted murderer.
2. The Confession Killer
Henry Lee Lucas was sentenced to life in prison for killing 11 people. In the months leading up to the final verdict, however, he confessed to hundreds of murders that… did not perform. Thanks to his cooperation with the authorities, he met with preferential treatment from the police, until they caught both him and the law enforcement in a series of lies.
3. Amanda Knox
Amanda Knox’s roommate is dead, and the authorities are eager to point out the killer. Young Amanda Knox spends 4 years in an Italian prison before being acquitted by the court. The documentary includes numerous interviews with the individuals involved, including her former boyfriend – the Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, and Amanda Knox herself.
4. The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Undoubtedly one of the most successful documentary series, The People v. O. J. Simpson is the first season in the anthology series American Crime Story, and along with its impressive cast, it retells the event that shook every corner of the United States.
The series follows the trial against the former American football superstar O.J. Simpson, who was convicted on two charges of murder – of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend – Ron Goldman.
5. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez
Due to the disturbing content of this film, the producers hired a therapist to be available to the team during the two-year development of the documentary production. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez tells the story of the torture and murder of 8-year-old California boy Gabriel Fernandez and the difficult path that concerned individuals must take against the institutions, wanting – even posthumously – to give him a voice and prevent similar cases from happening again.
